Who can use the pharmacy UTI service?
The Queensland pharmacy UTI service is for women aged 18 to 65 with symptoms of an uncomplicated bladder infection (cystitis), such as:
- burning or stinging when you pass urine
- needing to go more often, or urgently
- discomfort low in your tummy
What happens in the consultation?
- Your pharmacist asks about your symptoms, health history and any medicines you take, in private.
- If the service is suitable for you, the pharmacist can supply a treatment and explain how to take it.
- If it isn’t suitable, we’ll refer you to a GP. Help Medical is an independent general practice located inside our store.
Allow about 15 minutes.
How much does it cost?
A consultation fee applies and isn’t covered by Medicare. Ask us about the fee when you call on (07) 5592 2099.
When do I need to see a GP instead?
Pharmacists can’t treat UTIs through this service if you:
- are pregnant, or might be
- are under 18 or over 65
- are male
- have frequent or recurring UTIs
- have kidney problems, a urinary catheter or a weakened immune system
When should I get urgent medical help?
Get medical help the same day if you have:
- a fever, chills or shaking
- pain in your back or side
- blood in your urine
- nausea or vomiting
These can be signs the infection has spread to your kidneys. See a GP the same day, or go to an emergency department. In an emergency, call 000.
What can I do to feel better in the meantime?
- Drink plenty of water, especially in Gold Coast heat.
- Don’t hold on when you need to go.
- Ask our pharmacists about products to ease discomfort while you wait for treatment to work.
Always read the label and follow the directions for use. For other support, see our women’s health page.
